Grading Your Acne type is not any Rocket Science. Each grade of Acne has its own course of treatment. You can easily grade your acne by a simple visual inspection that will help you to choose the course of treatment for curing your acne.

Dermatologists use to categorize the Acne types into  four grades as mentioned below -

Grade I - Blackheads and Whiteheads/ milia

If you notice minor pimples on your skin or face very occasionally in small numbers (one or two) then just chill because your Acne is at Grade I and you can easily treat it at home with over the counter medications available that contains salicylic acid.

Grade I acne is very common for everyone during their early adolescence but many adults also experience this Grade I acne. It is generally noticeable as Blackhead and Milia. Blackheads are are generally noticeable on the nose and forehead whereas Milia are very common in the eye area and chin region.

Grade I acne should not be ignored and should be treated to prevent it from further progression to Grade II
Grade I acne can be safely treated at home using drugs available over the counter containing salicylic acid. Grade I acne responds quickly to the treatment resulting in Acne Clear Skin.

Grade II - Pauples and Pustules

Sometimes when Grade I acne left untreated or the severity is little high due to hormonal reasons, the Acne proceed towards next level. At that time, it was in moderate stage. The blackheads and milia started occurrirng in greater number. The breakout activity of Pauples and Pustules, sligh inflammation of the skin will be more frequent and obvious. The spreading is more obvious in Teens where acne starts spreading to other areas of faces. It may also start spreading over the other parts of the body like shoulders, chest especially in males, whereas in adult female the breakout is more frequent during and before the menstrual cycle in the cheeks, chin and jaw line area.

While your acne in in Grade II status, you can still treat it with over-the-counter medication containing Salicylic acid along with benzoyl peroxide lotion. Don't prick or squeeze the acne, it will worsen the condition.

If you notice that there is no significant improvement after treating for several weeks then it is the time to visit a dermatologist. You should not ignore this else your acne will keep progressing to Grade III and IV.

Grade III - Pauples, Pustules, Nodules

Acne reaches to Grade III either due to ignoring its suppression by simple at the home treatment or in lots of cases the reason being that acne does not respond to the Grade II treatment. The acne at this stage is at severe condition. The inflammation is even more and reddened. The breakout of papules and pustules are even more frequent along with the presence of nodules. Apart from spreading on the face region, it also attacks other regions like neck, shoulders and/or upper back, chest. At Grade III, acne are more likely to left scars as the infection spreads and become deeper.

At this stage, it is highly advisable not to ignore it neither keep wasting time trying on the counter medication and home based treatment. Consult a dermatologist who will give you better treatment both topical and systemic therapies. Delaying at this stage will aggravate the condition even more and it will be more likely to proceed towards Grade IV.

Grade IV - Cystic Acne

This is the worst stage of acne someone can go through. Dermatologists refer this type of acne as nodulocystic or cystic acne. The infection gets deeper and widespread over several parts of the body like entire back, chest, neck, shoulders, upper arms etc. Your skin will suffer the outburst of papules, pustules and nodules along with the cysts. This is a painful stage of acne. The chances of scarring are almost 100% in case of Cystic acne.
At this stage, dermatologists prescribe powerful medicines along with topical treatments to bring the Acne under control.
